Journal Article Analysis
This article is a survey that was published by Sport Management Review. In “A comparison of the college selection process for international and domestic student-athletes at NCAA Division I universities” (p. 176) Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011) survey the college selection process for international and domestic student-athletes. I chose this article because I want to research the international student-athletes in the future. A variety of international student-athletes come to the US to participate in NCAA sports because the NCAA has been a perfect system for teenager training. This article can help me to understand the selection process for foreign and domestic student-athletes at the NCAA Division I universities. I also can research about the most significant issue that international student-athletes come to the US in my field.
First of all, the overall structure of this article is Introduction- Methods- Results-Discussion (IMRD) (Swales & Feak, 2012). Authors can show the most relevant information to the readership clearly through IMRD. In this way, sports management scholars also can do their research logically. I can use this format that is beneficial for me to summarize main findings logically and clearly. Most of the articles about the sports management are surveys. This writing style can deal with studies precisely and summarize the main findings. I will try to use this form to write my methods and results. In this article, Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011), the object of study is “the comparison of the college selection process for international and domestic student-athletes at NCAA Division I” (p. 176). The purpose of the article is to determine what factors were most influential when international student-athletes chose to attend United States universities, to compare the difference between international and domestic student-athletes, and to determine the gender difference between international student-athletes (Popp, Pierce, & Hums, 2011). The exigence of the article is that the author examines the recruitment process for international student-athletes (Popp, Pierce, & Hums, 2011). The authors show the number of international student-athletes increase quickly in 20 years (Popp, Pierce, & Hums, 2011). The international student-athletes has been an indispensable part in the US. By the results and discussion, I can do a continued research about international athletes in the American Sports Alliance such as the NFL, the NBA, and the MLB. According to this study, it also helps me to find the reasons why the number of the international student-athletes increase in the future.
Also, the authors use some standard moves in the introduction (Swales & Feak, 2012). In the beginning, Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011) noted that “One of the primary activities of U.S. collegiate coaches is recruiting student-athletes” (p. 176). This part is 1A and shows the background that coach is the center of a team and recruits student-athletes (Swales & Feak, 2012). Then, Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011) found that “College athletics departments are also spending increasing…” (p. 176). This part is 1B and shows the connecting previous that coach should spend much money and time on finding a student-athlete (Swales & Feak, 2012). According to Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011), “Now, however, the recruiting landscape has expanded and coaches are looking beyond domestic borders to find potential college stars” (p. 176). This part is move 2 and shows that the coaches can recruit student-athletes all over the world (Swales & Feak, 2012). At last, Nels Popp, David Pierce, and Mary A. Hums (2011) noted that “This study had three primary purposes…” (p. 176). This part is move 3 and shows that the authors list the purpose of this study (Swales & Feak, 2012). Authors use move 1, move 2, and move 3 can point out the object, exigence, and purpose in the introduction. If I write a survey about sports management, I will use this writing style to structure my paper and make my paper precisely and logically.
